2008 Misawa Meetinghouse Remodel

Misawa Meetinghouse--2008 Remodel/Expansion

Misawa's church building is highly visible, directly across the street from the omote (main/front) entrance of the eki. The meetinghouse also serves an English-speaking military branch from the nearby US Air Base, for which Misawa is famous. The building was finished in 1986 and a remodeling/expansion was completed in 2008 to accommodate the large English-speaking branch.  The building was expanded to the rear and a new steeple was put in place that looks much more dignified.  A new chapel is part of the project, which also includes an elevator.  All pictures that appear here (with the exception of the 2000 comparison picture below) are courtesy of Murakami Yasukatsu, who was serving as Aomori District President at the time.

To celebrate the dedication of the chapel, an Open House was held some time after with a special guest, Brother Kent Derricott, a Sapporo Mission RM from the 1970s who is a well-know TV personality in Japan. Many fans of Brother Derricott, both members and non-members, came to see him and toured the chapel, making it a wonderful opportunity for many to know more about the church.

For before-and-after comparison purposes, here is a picture of the building pre-expansion, taken in 2000.  Note the old simple steeple in comparison to the new one shown in the picture above.

In these pictures it appears all seats are removable, even on the stand.  I'm unsure whether there are plans for fixed benches or stand seats.

Logo plaques in both Japanese and English for this dual- congregation building.

The building rededication was held August 3, 2008.

Thanks to Aomori District President Murakami for sharing his pictures of the new chapel, which has been described as huge and nicer than most chapels in North America.  Pres Murakami also uploaded the group photo above to the Pictures section, where a click will give you an enlarged version.  Don't hesitate to share your favorite mission photos there!
