Another sweet story by Elder Andrew!!
I am not sure what this holiday would be for us in the states, but dia del niño was a smash for the kids in Argentina. The dia del niño of 1996 was a VERY memorable one for me. My companion, Elder Gomez, and I decided to throw a big party for the kids of Rosario de la Frontera. My companion and I were the first and second counselors of the Rama, and we thought it would be a good activity seeing as most of the branch was either kids or mothers. We found some clown costumes somewhere, and proceeded to paint our faces with the only white substance we had...toothpaste! That was a mistake and I will tell you why later. The kids thought our costumes were great, well most of them did. One of the kids was totally freaked out by our costumes, and faces! He was about 2 and he started screaming. As I recall it was Blanca's son. Because not many of the members had cameras in that area they all wanted me to take pictures of their kids, and made me promise to give them duplicates. One member in particular said that she would take pictures for me with my camera while Gomez and I played with the kids. When I got the pictures back she had taken a ton of pictures of her child! It was pretty funny, and I kind of figured she would do that. Well the day went great until everyone left and Gomez and I had to take off the toothpaste. It came off just fine, but it gave us chemical burns on our faces. My face was red and pealy for a week! it was hard to go out in the sun with it like that. I do not recommend using toothpaste as clown make-up. Those were awesome times, and Elder Gomez was an awesome comp. |
