Stories: Gratitude Times Ten

You may be wondering why I choose "Gratitude Times Ten" to describe my gratitude for someone else's gratitude. But that just leads me to exponential theories and a different road than the descriptive one I choose here! Definitely expect more connotation then denotation with that title!
Names will be changed in this story--except that those who know the people involved may be able to guess at those person's true names, religion, etc.
This was a story worth sharing with my family, and those are precious to me. A young husband in his early thirties, whom I will call Jake, fell in love and married a very thoughtful girl in her late twenties, whom I will name "Mary." Mary was always very thrilled that "I am your first you baptized." Well, she happens to have two children who were very young, and when taught and asked if she would join the church, Mary made the point in subsequent visits, "Hey, why not? I'm practically Mormon anyway" or "I'm practically a member as it is. I go to church [and Jake is a member already, dear reader, with a great deal of courage!], I pray, I think it is good, etc." So she joined! And I, as a fresh new missionary had simply said on an early visit, "Bear with me here. You have probably heard a lot of people invite you to be baptized. Why NOT be baptized? WILL YOU . . . " Well, the rest was beautiful. She has a hard time working with her family, helping them see the difference this decision has made for her and her children. But the ending is up to "Mary." Oh, the Gratitude Times Ten. Try not getting emotional when a wonderful young man "Jake" comes up to you, having prayed you into his home, and says, "From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you. Thank you for your sweet boldness!" To this sister, I say, "Every person in your family has changed my life . . . yes, for the better! Thank YOU, times ninety million!" |
