2 April 2011: Mormon Temple Announced for Winnipeg
President Thomas S. Monson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today announced plans to build a temple in the City of Winnipeg. The temple will serve the needs of members in the Winnipeg area who currently travel for 6 ½ hours and nearly 600KM to the nearest temple in Regina.
President Allan Robison, who oversees the 13 local congregations of the Church, explained that temples are different from meeting houses where all are welcome for congregational worship on Sunday and other activities throughout the week.
Temples are closed on Sunday and are used by members of the Church for their most sacred ordinances including marriage where families are “sealed,” or blessed to last for eternity. More information on temples can be found at www.mormontemples.org/winnipeg.
There are now 156 temples worldwide that are currently in operation, under construction, or that have been announced. The Winnipeg Temple will be the 9th in Canada
