At the time this story took place, I was serving in the London Ward with Sister Place, a Senior missionary.
In 2003, President and Sister Marion decided to host a dinner for all of the Senior Missionaries in Winnipeg for Canadian Thanksgiving. Since my companion was invited, and I was not I went on exchanges with Sisters Cook and Cox, then serving in the Portage (St. James) area.
We went tracking that night, and had a few memorable experinces. This is my personal favorite.
The house was one of those old 1920's types, with a covered porch. Sisters Cook and Cox went into the porch and up to the doorbell, while I stayed at the door of the porch to avoid crowding the tractee. A little Native lady answered, and almost before the door approach was finished she said. "Boy, you guys should have been here last night, there was a UFO circling the neighborhood--it followed my son home!"
She then pushed past the other two sisters, trapping them on the porch, and rushed to where I was standing. Pointing to the sky she said. "It was right there."
Suddenly she gave out a little scream. "Its back! Its back!" she said. She looked me in the eye. "Are you freaked out yet?"
Now, I'm a big believer in honesty being the best policy, so I said. "Um, no, I think that a spotlight."
"Oh, no, oh no, it's a UFO!" She saw her son a few yards down and started yelling "Jeffrey! Jeffrey! Get back in here! The UFO's back!"
Poor Jeffrey came truding back in. "Mom, that's a spotlight." he muttered. About this time, the other two sisters managed to free themselves from the porch.
Needless to say, she wasn't intrested in hearing the gospel.
You know you can't make these things up. |
