Stories: Miracle in August

On Sunday August 1, 1971 I left church services early to take advantage of the beautiful Summer weather and to go for a motorcycle ride. Life at 17 consisted of exploring alternatives not always considering consequences. The only thought on my mind that day was the wonderful freedom of having the wind in my face and the power of my motorcycle at my beck and call. I turned South from Rexburg headed toward Idaho Falls. The ride was going wonderfully well until a twinge of conscience suggested that I really should be back in Rexburg attending my church meetings. I somewhat reluctantly turned the bike around and headed North toward Rexburg. Again I began to enjoy the sense of freedom and the exhiliration of being one with my motorcycle and the road. I approached the old highway bridge over the North Fork of the Snake River near Thornton without a care in the world. I was dilligently watching traffic approaching on the two way bridge when halfway across my day changed dramatically. While I was watching the school bus approach from the oppostite direction I hadn't noticed the car in my lane creeping along at a near standstill. Suddenly my motorcycle deaccellerated from 50mph to 0mph in under 1 second and I was catapulted helplessly across my gas tank and handlebars into the air for a short flight of maybe 30 feet. The flight wasn't too bad but the landing left much to be desired. I found myself laying in shock and pain on the pavement in front of the stopped car that had interrupted my freedom ride that day. Thoughts of dying were foremost in my mind as I considered the extent of my injuries and the pain taking hold of my limbs and abdomen. Kind witnesses came with blankets and pillows to try and comfort a young man that surely must have looked like a lost cause. The short wait for the ambulance to arrive seemed an eternity and the lonely wait in the hospital for x-rays and verdict was equally trying. Finally the Doctor announced that I would live. No broken bones. No internal injuries. My parents came afraid of what they would find. They left in relief when all was under control. Later an Uncle serving on the State Patrol came by to check on his "dying" nephew. He handed me my eyeglasses which didn't have a scratch on them and offered this explanation. We found them folded neatly on the rear bumper near the point of impact just as if they had been placed there. I believe in miracles and often small things bring great changes in our hearts and lives. That small August miracle let me know that God is watching over me and while he may not spare me the pain and discomfort of the consequences of my own actions he is always there ready to bless and comfort in times of need. I hope you continue to feel his hand in your life. Remember he loves you too. |

LDS QUOTE: |
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord's work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
