Making the Right Choice

Hereford Lads Football League voted 11-year-old Robin Bakewell as the 1997 Outstanding Footballer of the Year in recognition of his skills and leadership qualities on the football field. He helped his team gain first place in the league. The previous year he received the trophy for the most promising player.

This season, however, Robin has chosen not to play in the league, much as he loves the sport, because matches are played on Sunday. Robin, who was prepared to forego advancement in the football league rather than give up his attendance at church on Sunday, readily agreed to play on the B team. Robin is a member of the Hereford Ward, Cheltenham Stake. - Jean Rourke, Coalville Branch, Leicester Stake

Pioneer Day

On 29 August 1997 members of the Paignton Ward, Plymouth Stake, held a Pioneer Day celebration at the park situated in the town centre. The event was uplifting and well attended by members and visitors alike. The ward hopes to make the activity an annual event.

Among the displays were demonstrations of quilting skills, spoke-making for handcart wheels, pioneer baking skills, bread making, and needlework. - Alan Hotine, Paignton Ward, Plymouth Stake
