09 Jul 2012: Iwaki now allowed missionaries 07 Jul 2012
President Rasmussen informed me of the fantastic news that missionaries are now approved to live and serve in Iwaki; prevailing winds blow west off the ocean from the nuclear disaster site towards Koriyama and Fukushima (not south towards Iwaki), and therefore radiation readings are low in Iwaki.

Two sister missionaries will transfer to Iwaki effective 09 Jul 2012. President Rasmussen noted that finding an apartment was extremely difficult in Iwaki because it is relatively safer than surrounding areas and many have moved there, but one was found just 1 km from the eki (station) and 2.8 km from the church.

Background information:
After the March 2011 disaster struck Tohoku, due to radiation concerns, missionaries were pulled from all four Fukushima-ken (prefecture) cities: Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima, Iwaki and Koriyama. By August, missionaries were allowed to return to Aizu, the city furthest from the nuclear disaster site. Beginning in October 2011 two of the four missionaries in Aizu took turns traveling to branches in Iwaki and Koriyama on Sundays for church. Fukushima Ward similarly is visited from nearby Sendai.
