Church Launches Latvian Country Site 20 Feb 2008
February 20, 2008 — News from the Church website:

Reflecting the Church’s continued effort to expand its online presence in individual countries and languages, the Church has launched an official Web site for those in Latvia.

This site, which functions under the Europe East Area Presidency, will contain Church news and information specific to Latvia and serve as the official Church Internet presence in the country.

Since many people in Latvia have not heard of the Church, one purpose of the site is to spread accurate information about the Church.

“Many people have no idea what the Church is, and when they try to find information on the Web they generally get some site that states we aren’t Christians,” said Gatis Senkāns, a district president in Latvia who works with the site’s development. “We decided to put a simple explanation on the first page to explain that the Church is a Christian organization that stands for stable family values and conservative moral values.”

The site is scheduled to be further expanded in the summer of 2008 and will also be offered in Russian to accommodate the many Russian members in Latvia. It currently offers basic information on subjects such as the Articles of Faith, the general history of the Church, the history of the Church in Latvia and throughout the world, and “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” (Liahona,Oct. 2004, 49). The site also features talks from general conferences and messages for home and visiting teaching.

Also listed is contact information for each branch with an address, phone number, and times for Church services and English classes.

The Latvian site brings the total of Church country sites to 63. Each site is offered in the country’s official language and is available through LDS.org (click on “Languages,” then on “Country Sites”). The Church is striving to meet the increased need for online resources and currently maintains several Web sites to offer information.

LDS QUOTE:
"You are a great army of returned missionaries. Go forward with new zeal and determination, and through your example shine the light of the gospel in this troubled world. This is the Lord’s work in which we are engaged. God lives. Jesus is the Christ. We belong to His Church. This is my witness to you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen."
- Elder L. Tom Perry
Ensign, Nov. 2001
