Stories: We taught behind the pulpit of another church

Bo Iverson and I happened to be on our way home one night while serving in the Midwest City area (I think), just southwest of Del City. We heard some catchy intrumental music and singing coming from The Church of God in Christ not too far from our apartment so we stepped inside to see what was going on.
We took a seat in the back of their chapel, which was nearly completely filled. After a few minutes of watching the people sing and the band play one of the presiding people came away from the stand and came to invite us to sit up in front with them (since we were 'fellow Elders').
That was amazing, but more amazing is that they allowed us to speak. I went first, giving the congregation the first half or so of the first discussion which builds on common beliefs pretty much so the audience was very supportive and outwardly energetic.
Iverson was next, but before proceeding to speak from the pulpit he glanced at me, a sheepish grin if I remember. His look let me know he was going to finish what I started so be ready to run for the door if things get ugly. He went on telling everyone about Joseph Smith and other church principles, and the audience slowly quieted down as he continued. At one point he paused and someone from the back yelled, "Just let it go brotha!".
When he finished the people were clapping and we made our way toward the door at the meeting's end. As I recall the people were very friendly and we shook a lot of hands on the way out.
There were no converts to my knowledge from that experience, and I don't remember if we placed a Book of Mormon with anyone, but it was definitely a great experience for us.
I sometimes look back on that story in awe at the courage it took Bo Iverson to stand in from of all those people and teach a doctrine which was foreign to them over their own pulpit. Now that's what I call missionary work! |
