Texas Area 06 Jun 2008
Well I guess I'll share bits and pieces of my first area in the mission. First of all I loved it, I couldn't wait to start the mission. As I sat in the mission office Elder Hatch asked "How about you, Sister Becenti, where to you think you'll be going?" I don't remember what my response was, but Elder Hatch said, "Sister Becenti, you're going to Texas, Wichita Falls Texas". I was excited and I thought, "I guess that's in our mission." I got to Texas and was met by Sister Van-Orden and Sister Redmond. It was winter in Texas. When we tracted in the cold winter I thought my legs and feet were going to fall off. My face was so numb that I would only say what was important. Some how the Lord must have blessed me to endure because I didn't feel cold after a while. I was so exhausted that one point I nodded during a discussion with an investigator. I remember her name was Donna. She was golden, with her guard pooch dog. The elders were awesome, especially the span-ams or Spanish Elders. We taught many families and individuals. The discussions were not easy for me to pass off because I had language/communication barrier. I came from Native American background;some of it took a lot of practice, faith and a lot of Sister VanOrden's patience and love. She was wise and hard-working sister from Illinois. I remember she was thoughtful and very giving. For an example she would move anything off the road when it was in our way of driving such wood. Anything she got from someone she would give it to someone else in need. She left and then came Sister Barse (she called herself white lamanite)from California. She was fun and built a lot of confidence in me. She was bold, knowledgeable in sharing the gospel and musically talented. The area was large and the members were watchful over us and had many people to teach. We were always busy. I loved the area and prayed and cried that the work will go on there. Some other opportunities I enjoyed were: Service at an after-school-program. Helped kids who got out of school until their parents came. Sharing pamphlets at a college campus. Uplifting District Meetings and lunch afterwards Fun P-Days especially play basketball w/elders or an outing with members. Being apart of Donna Fowler's baptism. She gave up a lot to gain a strong testimony of the Book of Mormon. She said some things that were touching and humorous. She said, "When I read the Book of Mormon, it keeps saying to be baptized". So she did! She also stated when she got the Holy Ghost, she felt the Jesus Rush!(A good and warm feeling all over)Sister VanOrden and I didn't know what to say except try not to laugh. Some of the terms she used was because she had been a Baptist, but loved her willingness to keep the commandments and coming unto Christ. The Lord was truly merciful unto us now that I think back to this area. Stay tune for my second area!!!
