IRON ROD
June 2007
Dear Missionaries,
We once again wish to express to you our sincere love. We think of you constantly, pray for you always and desire your happiness and success as missionaries in the great OTM. In Proverbs 3:5-6, it tells us to "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy way acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Doctrine and Covenants 62:9 says . . . "I am with the faithful always." We testify to you that as you put your complete trust in the Lord, obeying His laws, rule and commandments with exactness, He will guide you as a missionary to find people to teach, to share your message with power and to find joy and fulfillment in your calling.
Elder Neal A. Maxwell said that missions are a time for learning. "If we are serious about our discipleship, Jesus will eventually request each of us to do those very things which are most difficult for us to do. Sometimes the best people have the worst experiences, because they are the most ready to learn."
We need to understand that obedience and service are not always convenient but they are always right. We have noticed that it is sometimes difficult for missionaries to stay motivated on a daily basis. We would ask you to prayerfully consider that as missionaries you are actually partners with God. Each day you must put your faith and trust in Him and say and do the things He would have you say and do. It will certainly not be easy, but you can know that he will be "with the faithful always," and that you are doing what is right and assisting Him in His work. We can receive great incentive from the First Presidency's message in Preach My Gospel. They challenge us "to rise to a new sense of commitment to assist our Father in Heaven in His glorious work. Every missionary has an important role in helping 'to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.' The Lord will reward and richly bless you as you humbly and prayerfully serve Him. More happiness awaits you than you have ever experienced as you labor among His children."
Elder Jeffrey Holland said, "I testify that God's love and the Savior's power will calm the storms . . . . Christ knows better than all others that the trials of life can be very deep, and we are not shallow people if we struggle with them. But . . . He rebukes faithlessness and he deplores pessimism. He expects us to believe."
Missionary work is just that: WORK!! But your life will be forever changed because of it and your Father in Heaven will ever be mindful of your sacrifices, your faith, your diligence and your obedience. He loves all His children and wants them to have the blessings of the Gospel that you and I enjoy on a daily basis. May we remember that each soul is precious to Him.
With love,
President and Sister Seal

"The habit of saying thank you is the mark of an educated man or woman. Express appreciation to everyone who does you a favor or assists you in any way. Thank the Lord for His goodness to you. Thank the Almighty for His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who has done for you what none other in all this world could do. Thank Him for His great example, for His tremendous teachings, for His outreaching hand to lift and help. Thank Him for His marvelous atonement. Confess His hand in all things"
Gordon B. Hinckley
It's great to serve in the beautiful OTM! With the heat on its way, so is a renewed blaze of missionary work about to sweep ovr the mission! What a privilege to serve our Lord and be His missionaries. Reflect upon the wonder of this work. Whose lives have you seen change? What miracles has the Lord allowed you to be part of? President Howard W. Hunter has said, "As a result of the many miracles in our lives, we should be more humble and more grateful, more kind and more believing."
With nearly half of the '07 year behind us, _now_ is truly the time to continue to move forward in gratitude, diligence and faith. The Lord will make it happen, remember He has set the goals. To accomplish them He asked us to do everything we can to listen to His Spirit. To double convert baptisms we need the Spirit. Remember the sons of Mosiah? They surely doubled convert baptisms in the lands of the Lamanites. They used the power of the Spirit. ". . . . the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in those times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come (1 Nephi 10:19)." We are those times to come. Now is the time. Don't wait to see success, follow the Spirit to it.
Love, Elder Couch and King
In a very large measure each of us holds the key to the blessings of the Almighty upon us. If we wish the blessing, we must pay the price. A part of that price lies in being faithful. Faithful to what? Faithful to ourselves, to the very best that is within us.
