Mission History

The Peru Lima East Mission was the 210th mission of the Church. It was created in January of 1988 from portions of the Peru Lima North & South Missions. It began with 126 missionaries, roughly half from each of the two contributing missions and it maintained approximately 186 missionaries during its first 3 years.

In the spring of 1990, tensions were high due to the terrorism from Sendero Luminoso. With the death of two missionaries in the Bolivia mission, precautions were made sending a number of North American missionaries to several Chile missions.

In September of 1990, Elders Christian Ugarte and Manuel Hidalgo were killed by terrorists in Huancayo. As a result of this, all the North Americans in the various Peru missions and the temple presidency were reassigned to other areas and the mission was led by Pres. Juan Alvaradejo of Mexico. Huancayo was administered by the local stakes and missionaries were kept out of that area for several months. At the time of the attack, Huancayo was one of the most productive missionary areas in the Church.

During the tenure of Pres. Earl (1988-1990), there were approximately 300 Peruvian missionaries, 104 North American missionaries and 6 from other countries.

In the eleven months of 1988 that the mission existed, the Peru Lima East mission finished the year 5th in the church in convert baptisms. In 1989 and 1990 the Peru Lima East mission was first in the Church in convert baptisms. Pres. Alvaradejo took over as President July lst of l990. That year also marked the year of the most convert baptisms in all the missions together for the Church, which achievement has not been duplicated again through the year 2000. That year also marked the year that the most Book of Mormons were given out around the world in response to President Benson's challenge.

The stakes created during this period where Huanuco (June 17, 1990), Lima Canto Grande (March 18, 1990), Lima Las Flores (Jan. 1988), Lima Lamanita (Jan. 1988), Lima Vitarte (Jan. 1988), Mantaro Huancayo (July 1989).

During the stewartship of President Juan Alvaradejo, additional stakes were organized. Lima Peru Chosica (May 1991), andLima Peru Tahuantinsuyo (May 1991) was created in 1991. The Bayovar Stake was created in Lima on 7 March 1993 and the Canto Grande Peru stake became the Lima Peru Canto Grande Stake 7 Mar 1993 as a result of changes made in the creation of the Lima Peru Bayovar Stake.

During the time period of July 1993 to July 1996, during the stewardship of President Rene Juan Cabrera, a second stake in Huanuco was created on December 17, 1995. It was called Huanuco Peru Amarillis. On Dec. 17th, 1995 the Lima Peru Santa Anita Stake was created. Originally Pucallpa was a part of the Peru Lima East Mission. It was organized into a stake on 5 Dec. 1993 and eventually was changed to another mission area. On 21 January 1996 the Cerro de Pasco stake was organized. It is probably the highest altitude stake in the Church.

From July 1996 to July 1999 and the presidency of Victor Hugo Gamero, more stakes were created.
The Lima Peru Campoy Stake was created 18 May 1997. Also in 1997, the Lima Peru La Molina Stake was created on January 5th. On May 18, 1997 the Lima Peru Las Violetas Stake was organized.
