News Item: Mission Updates

My wife and I recently returned from a two week trip to the Philippines. It was great to see the sights (but not necessarily to smell all the Region VIII smells). While much is still the same as when I left in 2001, a few things have changed. I thought I would make note of a few things as I encountered them.
Remember all those wonderful, broken roads in Western Samar? Some stretches are actually being redone with smooth stretches of blacktop pavement. The result currently is a lot of one-way sections of the National Highway, but one day it really could make that Catarman/Calbayog--Tacloban bus trip a little nicer.
The mission office may no longer resemble what you once remembered it to be (especially if you spent much time there, as did I). President Elggren completed a nice remodel job on the office. The place glows now with clean tile floors and new furniture, among other changes.
When I left, Tacloban and Catarman were awaiting stakehood. And still those districts wait. It has been determined that they still need stronger priesthood leadership. One of these days though.
UEP and Sogod have shiny new chapels. There may be others, but those are the ones I heard about.
Also, poor old Tacloban City upgraded (or downgraded, depending on how you see it) with the addition of a huge McDonalds between the Jollibee and the harbor.
You might have other interesting facts about changes if you have returned recently. Please feel free to let us now about them here.
