27 June 1999 Philippines Ormoc Stake Dedicated!

The following was taken from the journal of Jared Tesch:

26-27 June 1999

Ormoc is now a Stake...Area President Child of the First Quorum of the Seventy came with Elder Villereta, an area authority seventy. It was also kind of the capstone to President Dimaya's mission. The Stake Conference was held in the Ormoc Superdome with approximately 1470 people in attendance.

One of the most exciting parts was the simple creation of the Stake during the opening [business] of the Conference. The time was given to Elder Villereta and he proceeded by stating, "The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve...have discussed it and it is proposed that the Ormoc Philippines District with the following branches...be dissolved. All those in favor...any opposed. It is also proposed that the Ormoc Philippines Stake with the following wards and branches...be created. All those in favor...any opposed." There was such a special Spirit that was there. It was so exciting. I can testify that the Spirit testified that Ormoc and its Saints are ready for a Stake; a Stake of Zion.

It's interesting to note that President Child then spoke and stressed that now that they were a stake, their responsibilities hadn't changed, they were just now much more accountable for each other. The responsibility of the Stake was now upon their own heads and not that of the mission (President and missionaries).

Another awesome part of the Conference and President Child's address was a promise that he gave the members there. He first discussed the need for more temples in the Philippines and also a talk given by President Hinckley in So. America. He quoted Pres. Hinckley and promised the Saints that if they would "get their lives in order" and be worthy of the blessings of the temple by always carrying a current Temple Recommend, the Lord would bless them with a temple in their midst (probably in Cebu but not discounting Tacloban) soon.

5 February 1998 I read your history of Baybay. I did not see a mention of the church history. I was the 3rd missionary to ever serve in Baybay. I relieved the first senior companion and became the second senior to serve there. Briefly, when I came there we were all meeting in our house for church. This was only a one-hour sacrament meeting. We used to sit around the lounge and pass a cup and saucer for sacrament. It was not even a branch then, only a group. After the first sacrament meeting I told my companion that no one would want to join this so we locked ourselves away for two days and planned and organized things. When I left about 3 months later we had a branch, a full 3 hour church program, mid week choir practice (I cannot sing but I did in Baybay) and mid week MIA. We also had a church sign made, lots of pews (we did it with a missionary couple from Ormoc) and a sacrament table built. We ordered a box of manuals, sacrament cups and trays from Manila that we ordered through one of the missionaries in Ormoc and his Bishop father in Manila. That way we cut all the red tape and got all the stuff quick through unofficial channels. I am still waiting for my financial reimbursement from the district president in Ormoc for the money I paid out for the materials J . When I left 3 months later we had not baptized anyone but I think there were 16 baptisms later on with the new missionary. I kept a journal the whole time I was at Baybay so if anyone is interested I could provide names and dates. Also when we were there we took a trip down the coast to Maasin on our preparation day with the couple from Ormoc. There we met some members who had not seen missionaries for years. I think they opened the area soon after that. I wish I could have known more of the history of Baybay when I was there. What has happened to the church in Baybay since? I also served in Ormoc as district leader before this.
Regards,

Ralph Mackey
