I'd say the following three (geographically ordered, not priority ordered)...
1. Victoria Falls - OK, that's Zambia and Zimbabwe, but it was part of your mission.
2. Kruger Park
3. Table Mountain / Cape Town

Hi all,
I am new to the page, but did serve in the South African Mission 1964 - 1966. The mission covered everything from Cape Town to Lusaka in those days. If you were to visit SA again, what would be the top 3 places you would visit or want to show your spouce.
We are presently serving in the Kenya Nairobi Mission as a Senior Couple and having the time of our lives. At the conclusion of our mission next year we plan to make a 2 or 3 week visit to SA to visit places that will be of most interest. We would be interested in your suggestions.

Checking in from Xi'an, China. Hello to alumni who served with Presidents Robert P. Thorn and Dale E. LeBaron. I'm presently in Xi'an, China where I work in business consulting and live with my wife and two youngest sons. Our family has been here for 5 years and it feels like home!
We have a branch of the church here with about 25 members during the academic year, but numbers dwindle to almost nothing in the summer months. I'd love to hear from any of my fellows from the mid-70's!

Nando's will be opening their first US restaurant in Washington DC sometime mid-May, 2008. The address is: 819 7th Street NW. Here's the official link: http://www.nandos.com/worldwide/usa1.html
For the west coast fans, still the closest Nando's would be Vancouver or Calgary. I eat at both locations quite often and the food tastes as authentic as the Nandos in SA. Of course you can find the sauces at any World Market, most British import shops and in select Albertsons.

Hey, can anyone update me on how things are doing in Tembisa. I served there as an Elder in 2001 when two wards met at the same building and assisted in breaking the ground for a new chapel along with 5 other Elders in the ward at the time, has the chapel since been built???
Also still trying to get hold of Elder Benjamin Norton from California who may have since moved and have tried to contact Elder Yimer(Solomon) from Ethiopia without success. If anyone can help get in touch with me asap.
Thanks

Andrew is quite right. There are a couple of mission-related Groups on Facebook. If I recall, all but one are President-specific, but they will let you join anyway. In my dream world, Facebook opens up an API for networks, and we create an optional "LDS Mission Network" scheme. Then mission.net goes away and we all just use Facebook. Are there any philanthropic billionaires out there who want to fund this? I'll be happy to be the program/product manager...

Hi Folks,
An additional resource to the folks on here that I have just signed up to which I thought would be good for many of you is Facebook.com Our illustrious webmaster is on there as are some of the folks that we served with, Zundel, Nathan Austin etc. Also, some of the folks/members you may have met while serving are on there too. I found Alan Chazen of the Gold Reef Ward.
Cheers,
Andrew

I'll bite on this as well, I served from 1996-1998 in Hilbrow, Bloemfontein (blomanda), Soweto (Protea and Pimville), Thembisa, Mamelodi, Lesotho and Thaba Nchu. I would especially like to hear about members in Soweto and Pimville areas.
|
|
I'll chime in too, best as I am able:
I served from 1987 - 1989 in the areas of Brakpan, Johannesburg (3 times), Yeoville, Springs, Florida, Pretoria, Ennerdale, and Verwoerdburg. And maybe a couple more I don't recall!
|
|
You idea to follow up on how members or investigators are doing is a great one. I did not serve in any of your areas, but I served in Carletonville, Ennerdale, Kempton Park, Rustenburg, Pretoria, Florida, Springs and Bloemfontein from 1987 to 1989.

Hey, I have an idea! What if we posted on this thread when and where we served. That way, we could tell each other about how the people from those areas that we knew or taught were doing while we were there.
I served from Sep 1998 - Sep 2000
I served in (in this order) Germiston/Alberton, Botswana (Lobatse), Vereeninging, Seshego, and Khutsong.
If anyone served in any of those areas later than me, I'd love to hear how people there are doing. Anyone who served earlier than me, I'd be glad to fill you in on anyone.

I'm very sorry to have to report that President R.J. Snow, President of SAJM from 1987-1990, died in a car accident in Provo, Utah on Tuesday night.
Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Any of you Alumni who served between 1994 -1996 under President Orr may be interested to know that I have finally typed up the lyrics (as I remember them) to the unofficial mission song "Rooibos Tea" that was penned by Von Brughan and I think Andelin if memory serves. It is very amusing and set to the tune of Pennroyal Tea by Nirvana. Anyone who wishes to have a copy sent to them should mail me using the contact address on my alumni page.
Tot siens and braai fleis,
Andrew

I wanted to inform you that Kent Werner, who served in this mission from the end of 1982 to 1984 died on Jan. 1, 2004. His obituary is in the Daily Herald in Provo, Utah. I grew up with Kent and he was a friend of mine.
