It was 1963 or so, and my companion and I were working in Rothrist, a small town near Arau.
We had an investigator named Frau Bischoff, who had been taught forever, it seemed, by several teams of Elders. Her husband was a stern Swiss man and disliked the missionaries visiting her. He refused to give her permission to be baptized
She was a marvelous lady, and kept inviting us. We were teaching another woman in her town, and we mentioned it to Frau Bischoff. She told us about the lady's "foif vor foifey ma'". (4:55 man)
Seems like this fellow would visit afternoons, and her husband's train from work would arrive at five minutes to five every day.
The gentleman friend would hop over her back fence promptly at 4:55, becoming well-known throughout the village. The lady didn't show a lot of interest in the Church, so we applied our efforts elsewhere.
Anyhow, one day out of the blue, Frau Bischoff said would like to be baptized. It seemed her husband asked what she would like for her birthday... he said "anything", and she told him she wanted to be baptized into the Church. He finally gave permission, but didn't attend the baptism.
My companion baptized her, and I confirmed. It was a happy day for her, and for us. Baptisms were rare back then, as they probably are now.
Later, she confided to us that she suffered a weakness in her arm and shoulder for years.
She said that as she was being confirmed, she felt it leave her, and had no more problem. Sister Bischoff was definitely a lady of great faith.
One of the good ones I met in der Schweiz. |
