Well, only God knows for sure, but I suspect (amongst other reasons) He sent me to France in order to bump into a German family, the Kram (sp?) family. I always thought it was a bit odd that the Lord sent me, a fluent German native living in Arizona, to serve in France. Mind you, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to learn French ...and to live in France for two years. I was expecting Austria, Switzerland, or perhaps even Brazil ...but I secretly wanted to go to France. The first city I was assigned to work in was Colmar. I had only been there a few months when we (I think David Skinner was my companion at the time) bumped into a young mother who couldn't understand our door approach. She said something about "Je ne parle pas Francais" ...but had a hint of German in her voice as she said it. Being a German native, I tried a German door approach. To our surprise, it worked. She was delighted to have someone to speak to. She invited us in. I squeezed out a tortured first discussion in German (although I grew up in Germany, I never really learned any German religious words), and we were invited to come back when her husband got home. Her husband, it turns out, worked in Germany just across the border and took the train back and forth each day. Make a long story short, over the coarse of the next two years or so, and a dozen missionaries later, many of their extended family members joined the church. I do not know what has become of them (and would love to learn if any of you know), but I am certain the Lord's hand was in this unlikely encounter. They were a beautiful family. |
