The Hawai`i Honolulu Mission has split!...kind of. Recently a new mission called the Marshall Island Majuro Mission was formed out of the Micronesia Guam and Fiji Suva Missions, along with a branch from the Hawai`i Honolulu Mission. This new mission covers the Marshall Islands, Nauru, and the Gilbert Islands or Kiribati, which includes Fanning and Christmas Islands, part of the Hawaiian mission. Congratulations to our Marshallese friends and tiny Christmas Island for having a new mission of their own and congratulations to all of the missionaries who have helped to build the kingdom of God!

I served in Kekaha for 10 months back in 1979. Long time ago. I will always remember the good ward members there. The Kua family and Furtado family were especially nice to me. I seemed like wherever I tranfered to, a member of the Kua family was there to make me feel welcome and feed me. I met Kenway when I first arrived in Hawaii, just before he was transfered out to Micronesia. Then when I was in Pearl City with Elder Cook, I met one of his sisters (cannot remeber her name), then I was transfered to BYU-H and met his other sister Kuini, then I get tranfered to Kekaha where I met the rest of his family. What a great family. So kind. I will always remember them and be grateful for all they did for me while serving in Hawaii.

Pres. Willes asked that the following message be posted.
My name is Mark James and I'm a professor at BYU--Hawaii. I am also a member of the Board of Directors for the Mormon Pacific Historical Society. I am pleased to announce that we have been successful in reprinting the most famous issue of the Hawaii Honolulu Mission newsletter (1942; see details below). We hope that this publication will be of interest to many of you and hope that you might help us get the word out. Very few copies of this publication exist (actually only 1 or 2 intact copies). We have used James E. Hallstrom's (served 1940-42) copy for scanning purposes. Just a bit more about the publication itself: In the months that followed Pearl Harbor, it appeared that soon there would be no more missionaries in the islands and there was still a very real possibility that Japan would succeed in occupying the islands. Not knowing if the church would be able to sustain contact with church members, President Waldron decided to put together a special issue of the Ka Elele o Hawaii that would serve as a local general handbook of sorts for local leaders (e.g., District/Branch presidents, etc). The publication is nearly 100 pages long, in which the entire history of the mission is summarized (1850-1942) and in which all the names of every single missionary ever to have served during that 92 year period is listed (both for the Hawaii mission and the Hawaii Japanese mission). There is a complete listing of all local leaders in the various branches at the time, and a picture of every chapel. In yearbook style, there is a picture and short bio of every missionary serving in 1942, and several short "chapters" on the organization of the church (auxiliaries, quorums, etc). The title sells for $20 (plus $5 shipping within the U.S.). Interested parties may contact me by: email jamesm@byuh.edu or by mail:

I've been gone a lot so far this summer and when I got home there were a lot of e-mails waiting. Everyone here is fine and busy. We are working in the St. George Temple on Thursday and Friday mornings and that is keeping us off of the street when we are in town. We understand that the couple who replaced us in the mission office have probably finished their mission and will soon be going home.
Mahalo nui loa for you friendship and love.

It was nice to hear from you! Sorry i've been so bad about keeping in touch, life has been crazy lately. My family is good, and i'm hanging in there too! Holly and i got married in the mesa temple on the first of the month, and we just returned from our honeymoon on friday. It was a blast! We went to Disneyland, and then went on a cruise to ensenada, mexico. The ship stoped in san diego, catalina island and ensenada, and we left out of los angeles. We loved it, though Holly got a little sea sick. so now we're back, and reality is kickin' in. We got work and school and bills and all that fun stuff that never goes away. Anyway, it was nice to hear from you, and i hope all is well! Tell your family hi for me!
Love, Jake H Butler

Good to hear that you are doing well. It sounds like you have been very busy. Busy is always good. It too have been very busy. I have one semester left at BYU, I will be graduating in December. I have been trying to secure an intership for this summer that will hopefully turn into a good job when I graduate. In addition I am working as a supervisor of Intramural basketball. It really has been a fun but trying job at times. I hope all is well.

Hey Isaac,
I'm doing great. I'm trying to save up some cash so that I can make a trip to the islands this fall. Hope it all works out but you never know. I'm soooooo busy with work lately. It seems to consume my life. I just got a new bishop in my ward. I know him pretty well. We share the same office some times. My day consists of wake up, work, eat, work, and then sleep. Not much of a life huh? I try to catcha midnight movie every now and then to break the routine. All in all life is pretty good here in Hurricane, UT. I can't really complain.

Aloha Issac,
How are you? I am doing great but I miss being in Hawaii. I am currently
attending school at BYU-Idaho. I went here for almost a year before my mission
and it feels good to be back in school (but it would feel better to be called
back to the Hawaii Honolulu Mission). My major is in Biology. With that I hope
to go to medical school and eventually become a doctor.
What is new in your life? Do you still get to do lots of missionary work? I
don't get to do as much as I would like to. I guess I just need to keep my eyes
open for oppurtunities. I am currently looking for a job. I was working at a car
dealership when I lived in Boise but I havent found one here yet.
Anyway, not much else going on here. Write me sometime and tell me how you
are doing.
Mahalo, Austin Lowe
