Stories: Funeral in Halden

My second area was Halden, the summer of 1966. During my three months there we served with a senior couple. The branch president found us out tracting one day and told us to meet Elder Hess at the hospital morgue. Brother Jorgensen had died. Elder Pocock and I were taught by senior missionary Fred Hess (he was 70 in 1966) how to dress a body in Temple garments. He was both practical (showed us how to deal with rigor) and spiritual. It helped me years later when I dressed my younger brother. One of us fainted during the ceremony. My companion and I took the long bus ride and even longer walk to the [Lutheran Church] funeral chapel a few days later. There were about 200 people there. When the branch president didn't show up, the family asked us to conduct, speak and pray in his stead! I managed to lead the singing and utter the opening prayer. Elder Pocock gave a short eulogy and was five minutes into a pretty good sermon when the branch president walked in. He let my companion sweat it out a few more minutes and then discreetly took over. That was a two page entry in my journal. |
