I remember the Stavanger bathhouse too. There were 6 missionairies in Stavanger when I was there. I remember Elder Cahoon and Elder Russell and Elder Boulter. Elder Aune too perhaps was there. We met every saturday morning to clean the sweat off.
They had a very large sauna where the men sat naked. The benchs were like an ampitheater surrounding a large pile of big rocks in the center of the large room. Occasionally a huge thick armed and square shaped lady in a smock would walk through and throw water on the rocks in the center of the large room the missionaries always covered themselves with the towel provided. But the woman was totally disinterested as were the 20 or so old men who sat waiting for their pores to clean out.
One morning after a shower and a stint in the large sauna one of the missionaries challenged us to try the cold pool. We knew this would not include any swimming so we agreed. As we stood beside the cold pool sweating from the heat of the sauna. We could look out at the fiord which came right up to the building. There were blocks of ice floating in the fjord outside the window and the water in the cold pool was piped directly in .. which gives you a feel for the coldness of the pool.
Then Cahoon jumped in feet first. As his head broke the water he let out an "aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh refreshing" .. So I went in next jumping about 3 or 4 feet out from the edge. The shock hit me like a 1st degree burn. Every pore in my body was on fire. .. And that was the day I learned to walk on water. We never used the cold pool again. and none of the other missionaries would try after that. |
