The Conversion of Eliazar Rincones

In January 1992, I was a full-time missionary serving in the Venezuela Caracas Mission. President Hoffman had just transferred me from Barrio La Urbina to Barrio Puerto La Cruz to work with Hermana Dávila. That first month was really rough for some reason. We made a lot of visits, and we met a lot of people, but nothing came of it. I don't suppose it helped matters that I could barely speak a word of Spanish. I had been in the county for only one month, and I wasn't learning the language very quickly.
One of the young women in the ward arranged for us to meet with her friend, Elias. We taught him the first discussion at her house. He was very polite, but probably not very interested. We gave him a Book of Mormon and invited him to read it and pray about it. We made a follow-up appointment for later in the week.
Later that week, we were waiting for him at his friends house. As he walked up the stairs, he saw us sitting on the porch, and the look on his face made it obvious that he had forgotten about our appointment. I dont think that he really wanted to, but he sat down to talk with us. We asked him about his reading of the Book of Mormon. He hadnt read, so we decided to read together. As she always did in this situation, my companion assigned each of us to take turns and read five verses each of 3 Nephi 11.
I think Hna. Dávila started. She read the first five verses, and then it was Eliass turn. He read five verses, and then it was my turn, but Elias kept right on reading, and reading and reading. He was really caught up in it. Suddenly, he seemed to remember where he was, and he looked up at us and apologized. Of course we were very happy about his enthusiasm.
After that, he read every assignment we gave him. He never missed an appointment, and he was very eager to introduce us to his friends and family. His sister and his estranged wife listened to the discussions. His friends Manuel Aguilera and Miguel Rodrigues were both baptized. His enthusiasm was infectious and the work multiplied. Hermana Dávila and I were teaching discussions all day, and we didnt even have to leave the neighborhood. We served together five months in Puerto La Cruz. Before we were transferred, fifteen of our investigators were baptized.
The Book of Mormon is a powerful witness of Christ. It has changed many lives, but never before or since have I witnessed such a dramatic or immediate change as it worked in the heart of Eliazar Rincones that day in Puerto la Cruz. I have looked back on that experience many times, and I just marvel at the work and the wonder that Lord has brought to pass inour day.
On June 7, 1992, Elder Bradford of the Seventy visited Venezuela and toured the mission. While he was in Puerto La Cruz, he decided to create the new Puerto La Cruz Stake from the Barcelona Stake, partly because Elias, Manuel and Miguel had been ordained elders. I was no longer serving in Puerto La Cruz, but I felt very proud to have made a contribution to the new stake.

El 7 de junio de 1992, Elder William Bradford de la setenta vistió a Venezuela y viajó por toda la misión. Mientras que él estaba en Puerto la Cruz, él decidía divider la estaca Barcelona y crear la estaca nueva de Puerto la Cruz, en parte porque habían sido Elias, Manuel y Miguel ordenado a la oficina de elder.
