Finding an address in Japan is an important skill. You will need to learn to read a map while on your mission. A Japanese map is called a Chizu. They are readily available for purchase in bookstores and convenient centres. Large cities like Tokyo, Kita Kyushu, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe are divided in districts known as ku. A ku is subdivided into a cho. In a cho the homes are numbered individually (ban). Smaller cities have different systems, but the homes are still numbered within a cho. There are also many smaller towns, (machi) and villages, (mura), which dot the rural areas of Japan. Each neighborhood will have a police stand known as a Koban. There you can get help with a map by an officer on duty who can assist with finding an address. Japanese people are friendly and willing to help when asked. They may even go out of their way to find an address with you. The postcard displayed here shows how addresses are written. Notice the Japanese write from right to left vertically down the page. The Prefecture is on the far right, next to that is the City and Number and then the persons name to the left of that.
