Japanese money is usually an item that can bring on culture shock. Some missionaries may view it as "play money" because of its differences in size, color and denomination. The Japanese money system is based on the yen. The following are denominations of yen:
The coins are in one yen (ichi en), five yen (go en), ten yen (ju en), fifity yen (go ju en), and one hundred yen (hyaku en) denominations.
The currency below is made in one thousand yen (sen en), five thousand yen (go sen en), and ten thousand yen (ichi man en) denominations. There is also currency in hundred yen (hyaku en) and five hundred yen (go hyaku en). Currency in one hundred yen is very rare.

Japanese money looks different from other countries. Some coins have a hole in the center. Paper currency is also a different size for each denomination. Paper currency denominations are also different colors.
