Hey all,
Last April confernce we had a mission reunion. It was tons of fun. As a result of the reunion, we formed a reunion committee. As part of this reunion committee we are trying to put together a directory of all missionaries that have ever served in the Philippines Tacloban Mission. The purpose of this is so that we can make sure that all missionaries from all mission presidents get invited to our semi-annual mission reunion. We want these reunions to be for all missionaries from all mission presidents. We had a couple of missionaries that served in the 90's come to our conference in April and it was fun to hear all of their experiences.
If you can help us out with our task of gathering information for the directory, please email me at kanangtambok@gmail.com. If could just send your name, phone number, email address, current home town, and maybe even a mailing address if that's the best way to contact you. Also, which years you served and which mission presidents you served under. Dugang pa niana, if you know any contact info on missionaries that you served with that aren't on the website, please send me that info and I will try to contact them.
Salamat kaajo sa inyong pagtabang and I hope to hear from all of you soon.
-Mike "BOK" Merkley
P.S. Our goal for putting the directory together is August 1, 2006, so please help us make this goal.

I went to the renuion last Friday (after being out of the Philippines for nearly 8 years!) and had a great time. I took my two kids with (my wife stayed home, being late in her pregnancy) and it was a lot of fun.
Going in I was a little nervous because it's been so long and I didn't think very many older RMs would be there. I was right, hardly no one I served was there. But so many who were there very friendly--especially Brother and Sister Elggren. I'm so glad I went. I'll be trying really hard to make the next one as well and I encourage all the older RM's to come as well!
You'll be able to see my new son! (Yep, born Sunday morning at 6:48am. 9 lbs 7 oz--and 2 weeks earlier than the due date at that! Imagine if she had gone full term. . .)

I was absolutely appalled to hear about this. Hope you all feel like we can help do something about this.

>HBO's new series, "Big Love", is about a polygamous family and is set in a

Hello, I would like to thank all those who have offered their help in this undertaking, there was a great response as I know we all love the people of our mission.
Unfortunately I will not be able to live up to my desires stated in the previous charity message. I had come to the decision that the only way I could commit to run the charity properly was if I could receive some independent study credit for doing so. They have recently informed me that they will not be able to so.
Thank you for your interest, lets keep the people of Guinsaugon and surrounding areas in our prayers. God Bless.

I am starting to plan a charity to help So. Leyte. My friend and I are putting to gether a business plan to get donations from Home Builders here in Calgary. We plan on rebuilding a bunch of homes wherever is the best place to do so, and have thought of ways to help flood problems. We are serious about this and are waiting to here from some people in Leyte to see if they would oversee operations there while we weren't there. Provided we get said assistance, this will happen. Feel free to contact me, we can figure out ways to get you involved, perhaps soliciting home-builders in your area with the business plan we make up. We are excited for this, I am a graduating Political Science student, and my freind is an accountant, so we have good backgrounds to make this happen. Feel free to contact me for further details/progress. Lets help those wonderful people, we served them once, lets do it again; we have so much, and so many opportunities to help.

Here is the text of an article in the Church News portion of the Deseret News, Salt Lake City, Utah, week ending February 25, 2006:
CHURCH QUICK TO RESPOND WITH AID FOLLOWING PHILIPPINES MUDSLIDE
GUINSAUGON, PHILIPPINES
The Church responed quickly with assistance for the village of Guinsaugon buried by a massive landslide Friday, Feb. 17, impacting at least three members. All missionaries were safe, according to Elder Richard J. Maynes of the Seventy, president of the Philippines Area.
Still missing is recent convert Joseph Misa's family, including two siblings believed to have been in an elementary school that was buried. He was away from home visiting his grandparents at the time of the disaster. Members Paul Sescon and Epie Capilan had their rice fields inundated in mud. They are members of the St. Bernard Branch [St. Bernard is a Branch?!? Nindot! Kanusa 'na nahitabo?], Maasin Philippines District. The meetinghouse of the branch of more than 100 members [as of August 1998: 3-4 members] is about five miles from the landslide location [in the town proper no doubt--Guinsaugon is medio bukidnon].
Among the assistance from the Church was used clothing, relief bags containing enough to feed a family of five for three days, and hygiene kits. Twenty full-time missionaries from the Philippines Tacloban Mission joined the relief effort.
There is also a picture with a caption: "HELPING: From left, Elder Jared Erickson, Elder Alex Pagatpatan and Elder Brandon Carree are among force from the Philippines Tacloban Mission that joined others in providing aid for villagers devastated by mudslide."

I don't know the latest, but thanks for sharing the information about the areas open around there. I served in Hinunangan starting april 97 till I went home in September. It's very sad, and our family's prayers go out to the people of Guinsaugon.

I reopned St. bernard in Dec 03 after not having any missionarys there for around 10 months. It was my longest area, and I trained my Greenie there. I was there for 8 months. It was a good time, even though it was really chalanging at times.
When I was in Saint Bernard we experianced simular conditions of massive flooding and mud slides. It was not to the extent as to what has just happend. It did knock out power for a week and water for two weeks, and several roads. But when i was there Panion Island had it the worst and had a simular mud slide near Lilonan. Only about 600 hundred died then. Including 2 members.
After this last week and my past experiances in southern Leyte, I've been thinking about trying to do somthing to help the people in Saint Bernard and souronding areas that were effected. I was even thinking about volentering with red cross or somthing. Anything to help. One thing that I though about was the possible prevention that could have taken place in Saint Bernard and in Liloan. Is there a possible way that we can help prevent future hazards like this from happening? The only thing I can think of would be to try and start a charity of some sort, aimed at prevention of future mud slides. I'm serious about this and I would love some more ideas, suggestions, even possible help.
